Help

>> How to start using the software (portable):

Apps work best on Windows 11 and Windows 10. Read compatibility details below.
Windows safety features may warn the software can be malware. It is safe.
Unpack the downloaded archive using 7-Zip and move the folder somewhere safe.
In the extracted folder you may find versions for different Windows editions.
Use what best matches your OS. The version for Windows 10 is upwards compatible.

Running on Windows 11/10
↪ Apps just run. Keep Windows updated to ensure your system runs safe.

- If your Windows 11 or Windows 10 is up to date you don't have to do anything.
Windows receives and keeps the required .Net Framework updated.
- I'm aware there may be Windows installations out there with .Net Framework removed. Clearly .Net Framework apps won't run on those machines.

Running on Windows 7 and Windows 8/8.1
↪ Most apps just run. Install .Net 4.6.2 (or 4.6) to increase apps performance.
↪ Apps that need .Net 4.6.2 or greater (upto .Net 4.8.1) to run: PDF JoinCount, SnowFlakes.

- Installing or upgrading to .Net Framework 4.6.2 on Windows 7 SP1 or Windows 8.1 will allow the apps to run on the newer framework with increased performance. Installing .Net 4.6 on Windows 8 will do the same. You don't need to uninstall any older versions of .Net Framework before installing these new versions. Upgrading the framework on older operating systems can noticeably improve an app's performance.

- Latest app releases may have a Windows 7 version in a separate folder.
You can use that app version without installing .Net Framework 4.6.2.

Running on Windows Xp and Vista
↪ Windows Xp and Vista need .Net Framework installed to run the apps.
↪ Apps not compatible with Windows Xp: PDF JoinCount, SnowFlakes.

- Apps compatible with Windows Xp require .Net Framework 2.0 to be installed.
To support this framework, Windows Xp needs to be updated with (minimum): Service Pack 2, and Installer 3.1 (these updates may have already been installed on your XP).
- If .Net is installed but apps crash, use the Cleanup Tool before reinstalling the framework. This kind of issue is only common in Windows Xp.
- In Windows Vista you can enable the .Net framework or install the 2.0 version.

- Installing .Net 4.0 instead or along .Net 2.0 on Windows Xp or Vista will allow the apps to run on the newer framework with increased performance.

- Latest app releases may have a Windows 7 version in a separate folder.
The app version for Windows 7 is also compatible with Windows Xp.

>> How to update the software (when used portable):

Assisted update:
- The portable version of the app can check daily to see if there's a new version available.
Update checks are likely not to work unless the app is running on Windows 10 or later.
App can check for updates only when the main window is shown, and only one time per day if successful. To disable update checks remove or rename the "CheckForUpdates.txt" file found in the "Data\Settings" sub-folder. To enable update checks create an empty file named "CheckForUpdates.txt" in "Data\Settings". App creates "CheckForUpdates.txt" only when running for the first time, if the Settings folder is missing.
- You may also check for updates using the "Check for updates" button in the "About" window.
This is also how you verify that the check for updates is working. Errors are muted otherwise.
- Licensed version of the app can ask to update itself when a new version is found if running on Windows 10 or newer.
- Apps that can currently check for updates are: ScreenBlur, InDeep Notes, SystemDateChanger, PDF JoinCount, FreeDriveC, AutoFire.

Manual update:
- Download the new version and unpack the archive. In the extracted folder you may find versions for different Windows editions. Use the one that best matches your Windows OS. The app version for Windows 10 is upwards compatible, while the Windows 7 version is both upwards and downwards compatible. The Windows 7 version however, will start and run tipically slower and will not have long paths support or automatic updates.
- Copy the new app files over to the existing app folder, and replace any existing files there. If not otherwise noted, a new version should make use of the old settings files. Any beta/test versions of the app can break settings compatibility, so use these app versions separately instead.
- When running portable and not installed you can move the program's folder to another location and in case the software is set to start when the user logs in you'll have to set it again. Other settings that you may want to revise after you move the software (in case you do) are file associations and settings related to the integration in Windows File Explorer.
Programs that have such settings are: CSlide, File List Maker.

↪ Unless the software is installed from Microsoft Store, by default app settings are saved in the app folder inside the Data subfolder. To have separate settings for each Windows user when using the portable version of the app, create a file named "PerUserSettings.txt" in the app folder (where app executables can be found). Existing settings found in the Data folder can then be used as defaults for each new user. Do not remove the Data folder as it will still be used for inter-process communication and settings shared between users. To have app settings saved in user's AppData folder instead of the app folder, also create a file named "AppDataSettings.txt" in the app folder. Not needed if the app folder is placed in the Program Files directory. If multiple Windows users will run the app concurrently using the same executable, create a "MultiUserMode.txt" file in the app folder to let the app know.

>> How to remove the software (when used portable):

- If the software is set to start with Windows, you can change this setting first. Settings that you optionally may revise before you remove the software are file associations and settings related to the integration in Windows File Explorer. Then stop the program and delete its folder.
